NEMA Sensitises Residents, Conducts Flood Rescue Simulation In Kaduna

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has sensitised residents and conducted flood rescue simulation exercise to strengthen community preparedness ahead of the 2026 rainy season in Kaduna

The exercise formed part of NEMA’s 2026 Disaster Preparedness and Response Campaign on floods and related hazards across the country.

Mr Suleiman Muhammad, Head of Operations, NEMA Kaduna Office, said the exercise was aimed at building the capacity of residents as first responders during emergencies before the arrival of rescue agencies.

Muhammad said the simulation was designed to equip communities with practical rescue and response skills to minimise losses during flooding incidents.

“By training the communities and carrying out simulations, they will be able to respond immediately in case of any emergency before government agencies arrive.

“We want communities to start rescuing their people before the arrival of any response agency,” he said.

He said Kaduna was among states identified as being under moderate flood risk in 2026 based on predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency.

According to him, 21 local government areas in the state were likely to be affected by flooding during the rainy season.

Muhammad said NEMA had earlier engaged stakeholders and traditional institutions in Chikun and Kaduna North Local Government Areas on precautionary measures against flooding.

He said the agency also sensitised communities on clearing blocked drainages and adopting preventive measures to reduce the impact of floods.

“We do not want disasters to happen, but we want to take proactive actions before the disaster so that losses to lives and property will be minimal,” he said.

Also speaking, Pastor Andrew Gladstone, General Overseer of a church in the affected community, commended NEMA and the Nigerian Red Cross Society for the rescue simulation exercise.

Gladstone said flooding had become recurrent in the area, occurring about twice yearly and causing hardship for residents.

“This flood situation has been coming often, maybe twice in a year, and it has caused a lot of challenges to us and the community around this place.

“We thank for NEMA, Red Cross. Who really help us a lot  but we want government to provide lasting solutions so that this will not continue happening,” he said .
