NEMA Launches Public Awareness Campaign On Tanker Accidents, Fire Outbreaks In Katsina
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has conducted a one-day sensitization and public awareness campaign on petrol tanker accidents and fire outbreaks in Katsina State. The campaign aimed at educating key stakeholders and the public on the dangers associated with tanker-related incidents and fire emergencies.
The event was held in two segments. The first segment featured a stakeholders’ meeting at the Katsina State Old Government House conference hall, drawing participants from various emergency response and security agencies.
Delivering a technical presentation, the State Commandant of the Federal Fire Service, ACF A. Aliyu, highlighted common causes of fire outbreaks, with a focus on tanker explosion incidents. He also outlined preventive strategies and proposed collaborative approaches to mitigate future occurrences.
A representative from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) emphasized the importance of safe driving practices and the protection of lives and property, especially in the handling and transportation of petroleum products. A general discussion followed, during which stakeholders expressed concern over the growing frequency of tanker-related accidents and the urgent need for concerted preventive measures.
Speaking on behalf of the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaidah Umar, the Head of Operations for NEMA Kaduna Office, Mallam Sulaiman Muhammad, reiterated the agency’s commitment to coordinated disaster management. He stressed that proactive engagement with critical partners such as the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Police, FRSC, and the Nigerian Red Cross is vital in addressing emerging emergency threats.
“The need for proactive and joint response efforts in disaster management requires strong collaboration,” he said. “NEMA continues to demonstrate this through sustained partnerships aimed at achieving effective and timely disaster response.”
The second phase of the campaign focused on direct community engagement, particularly targeting tanker drivers. NEMA officials, supported by members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), visited fuel stations and tanker parks across Katsina. During the outreach, educational materials including posters and fliers were distributed to raise awareness on safe fuel handling and accident prevention.
The campaign underscores NEMA’s ongoing commitment to public safety and the reduction of fire-related disasters through education, collaboration, and community engagement.
