NEMA Engages Stakeholders, Communities In Katsina On 2025 NIMET, NIHSA Flood Forecast


As part of Flood Early Warning System, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has identified disaster risk management implications and mitigation strategies for communication to communities at risk during the rainy season.

The Director General, NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar disclosed this during a stakeholders engagement meeting on 2025 National Preparedness and Response Campaign (NPRC) on Flood Disaster and Related Hazards held on Wednesday in Katsina.

She lamented the past experiences were Nigerians have suffered lost of lives, recorded many injuries, lost of means of livelihood, their savings and infrastructures costing billions of Naira have been destroyed by floods aftermath of floods and related secondary hazards almost every year.

The Director General represented by Head, NEMA Operations Office, Kaduna, Mallam Suleiman Muhammad said the agency has produced vulnerability maps for all communities at risk to serve as tools to guide governments at all levels to develop risk reduction measures to avert disaster losses during the year.

The DG NEMA added that public and private institutions, humanitarian, NGOs, school children and youth organisations are expected to leverage on these early warning tools to support the efforts of NEMA and other government institutions.

She recalled the flood forecast contained in the 2025 flood documents sources from NIMET and NIHSA that provided valuable insights into rainfall pattern and flood scenarios during the year which NEMA has developed  the 2025 Climate Related Risk Management Implications, Preparedness and Mitigative Action out of the predictions to serve as a guide to reduce the impacts of floods during the year.

On his part, the Deputy Governor, Katsina State, Farouk Lawal Jobe commended NEMA's resilient and prompt approach towards coordinating resources in managing disaster in Nigeria. Saying the agency is doing it's best to support people affected by disaster.

Farouk Lawal Jobe who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Deputy Governor's office, Alhaji Mannir Aliyu  said the state government has already been engaging community leaders and other stakeholders to educate people on the flood predictions and its implications.

Also, the Executive Secretary, SEMA Katsina, Hajiya Binta Hussaini on behalf of the state government thanked the Director General, NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar for her tireless efforts to support people in the state affected by different forms of disaster by approving relief materials worth millions to cushion their plight.

Finally, the participants at the end of the meeting comprising of NEMA, SEMA, Civil Defence, Police, NOA, Fire Service, Red Cross  and other relevant stakeholders went for an advocacy visit to flood prone communities in the state in order to enlighten them on measures to avert flood disaster with emphasis that disaster is everyone's business.
