Niger Delta Youth Leader Calls For Unity, Legal Action Amid Rivers State Crisis

Amid the political turmoil in Rivers State, which led to the declaration of a State of Emergency and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Niger Delta Youth Leader, Comrade Gbenga Fajoye, has urged calm and unity among the region’s youth.

Speaking to journalists on Friday at his Delta State residence, Fajoye commended High Chiefs George Tompolo and Kestin Pondi for their leadership in maintaining peace and securing vital oil infrastructure.

He acknowledged their efforts in preventing pipeline vandalism and ensuring uninterrupted oil production.

"The pipelines and the resources they carry belong to the Niger Delta people. Their destruction would only push us backward.

"I commend High Chiefs Tompolo and Pondi for their unwavering commitment to protecting these assets and maintaining regional stability." Fajoye stated.

As the Chairman of the Association of Unemployed Youths of Nigeria (UYAN), Fajoye praised Governor Fubara’s composed response to the State of Emergency, contrasting it with potential unrest in other parts of the country.

"Governor Fubara has shown exceptional maturity in his reaction to President Bola Tinubu’s announcement. In some states, this situation could have sparked widespread protests. Instead, Governor Fubara has called for calm, proving himself to be a true leader in a time of crisis," he said.

Fajoye further urged Governor Fubara to challenge his suspension in court, arguing that the Presidency lacks the constitutional power to remove a sitting governor.

"Governor Fubara must not accept this unconstitutional action. He should seek legal redress immediately because the law is clear—the President does not have the authority to remove a governor," Fajoye asserted.

He also called on Niger Delta youth to remain united, support Governor Fubara, and uphold democratic principles.

"Now more than ever, we must stand together and support our leadership, while maintaining peace. Violence and division will only serve the interests of those who do not care about the Niger Delta’s future," he emphasized.

Fajoye’s statement highlights the need for legal action, unity, and peaceful resolution in navigating the ongoing crisis in Rivers State and the broader Niger Delta region.
