NEMA Honours Traditional Rulers For Boosting Disaster Prevention In Kaduna
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has honoured traditional rulers in Kaduna North and Chikun Local Government Areas (LGAs) for supporting disaster prevention and risk reduction efforts.
Halima Suleiman, Head of Operations, NEMA Kaduna Operations Office, presented the awards during courtesy visits to the traditional rulers on Thursday as part of the agency’s Customer Service Week programme.
Suleiman said the visits were aimed at appreciating community leaders for their contributions to disaster management activities.
She said their collaboration had helped the agency disseminate disaster awareness and prevention messages to communities.
“I feel a sense of satisfaction because we have visited people we have served and collaborated with to ensure our messages reach the grassroots,” she said.
Suleiman said the community leaders had demonstrated appreciation for the agency’s work and acknowledged their previous collaborations.
She stressed that NEMA could not effectively reach communities without the involvement of traditional institutions and other local stakeholders.
“NEMA cannot do it alone. We provide services to the people, and we cannot reach the grassroots without the involvement of community leaders,” she said.
According to her, recognising and motivating the leaders would encourage them to sustain their support for disaster prevention and mitigation.
She described traditional rulers as critical stakeholders whose cooperation was essential to effective disaster management.
In his response, the District Head of Tudun Wada, Tahir Mahmoud, thanked NEMA for recognising the contributions of traditional institutions to disaster management.
He pledged continued cooperation with the agency to promote disaster awareness and preparedness in the community.
Similarly, Dr Ishaku Yari, traditional ruler of Gbagyi in Chikun Local Government Area, thanked NEMA for recognising community leaders’ contributions to disaster management.
Yari pledged continued support for the agency’s awareness campaigns and disaster prevention efforts.
